A subject line test should answer a specific editorial question. It should not start with a promise to raise opens or a list of words assumed to work for every business. For a dispensary’s agency team, the useful outcome is a documented decision about clarity, tone or presentation.
Write the question before the alternatives
Choose one difference to evaluate, such as whether placing a confirmed operational detail first makes the message easier to understand. Keep both versions accurate and aligned with the body. Do not test unsupported claims, misleading urgency or wording designed to disguise the nature of the business.
Write down the reason for the test, the intended measure and the decision it could inform. If the proposed result would not change an editorial choice, a structured copy review may be more useful than a campaign experiment.
Keep the comparison interpretable
- Record exactly what differs between versions.
- Keep the body, sender identity and preview text consistent when testing the subject line alone.
- Confirm how the platform assigns recipients and whether groups overlap.
- Agree the observation window and review date before release.
- Record interruptions, delivery problems or other changes that affect interpretation.
When the subject line and preview change together, describe the exercise as a test of the pair. Do not attribute the outcome to one component. Avoid selecting a preferred result early and stopping the comparison just because it looks favorable.
Review preview text as part of the message
The preview should add context without promising information the email does not contain. Inspect the actual inbox preview rather than approving the text only in a planning document. Check whether the useful detail remains understandable when space is limited.
Use the brand voice guidance to keep alternatives recognizable as the same organization. A test should not trade accuracy or an established voice for an attention-grabbing variation.
Define the reporting limits
Ask how the platform calculates each measure and what activity is included. Keep reported opens distinct from confirmed readership, and review available downstream measures and recipient feedback without assuming any one metric captures the whole experience. See email measurement considerations for the wider reporting review.
A small difference or limited sample may not justify a winner. Record an inconclusive result when appropriate. Do not turn a single campaign comparison into a universal rule about length, punctuation or wording.
Save the editorial decision
Keep the versions, test configuration, observations and resulting decision together. State what the team will retain and what still needs testing. Hiigher’s campaign planning and copy services can support this process within a defined production and reporting scope.
