A recognizable email voice should sound like the business it represents. For a cannabis retailer or brand, that does not require leaning on stereotypes or treating every subject line as a joke. A useful agency brief explains how the brand speaks and what it will not imply.
Start with approved examples
Gather a few recent pieces the client considers accurate and on-brand. Identify specific choices: formality, sentence length, vocabulary and how the business explains unfamiliar terms. Do not assume that a competitor’s style or a staff member’s personal voice is the brand standard.
Choose clarity before wordplay
A subject line and preview should describe the message honestly. Review the two together so the preview adds useful context rather than repeating the same phrase. Humor is optional; accuracy is not.
Ask a reviewer unfamiliar with the draft what they expect to find inside. If their interpretation differs from the content, revise the wording before treating it as a candidate for testing.
Set boundaries for sensitive claims
Document language that needs specialist review, including statements about health, product effects or legal compliance. A playful phrase can still imply something the evidence does not support. Indirect wording is not a substitute for meeting provider requirements.
Use the approval workflow to record the source and responsible reviewer for factual claims.
Make consistency practical
Create a short style reference with approved terminology, capitalization and examples of clear phrasing. Keep it accessible to writers, designers and approvers. Update it when the client makes a deliberate change, rather than letting each campaign establish a new voice.
Review image text, sender name and linked destinations alongside the message. A consistent voice can be undermined by an outdated footer or a landing page that describes something different.
Separate voice decisions from measurement
Brand review decides whether a version is appropriate to publish. Testing evaluates a defined question using comparable versions and a suitable measure. Neither a clever line nor a higher open count alone proves business impact.
Continue with subject-line testing and open-rate interpretation. Hiigher’s campaign creative and management services connect those decisions with a clear client review process.
