An email can greet someone by name and still recommend the wrong store, repeat information they already know or introduce a benefit they cannot use. Personalization becomes useful when it changes the relevance of the message, not just the greeting.
For a dispensary, that relevance can come from a known store relationship, an expressed interest or a reliable view of where someone is in the customer lifecycle. Start with the question the information helps you answer: what would make this email more useful to this person?
Use the context that changes the next step
A customer’s preferred location may change the address, hours or destination link. A confirmed first purchase may change the amount of introductory information. A declared category interest may help select which educational content to feature.
Those changes have a practical purpose. In contrast, adding personal details simply because they are available can make a message feel intrusive without making it more helpful.
Choose a small number of meaningful distinctions. If two groups would receive the same explanation and the same next step, separating them may add complexity without improving the customer experience.
Distinguish what customers told you from what you observed
A stated preference and a purchase are different kinds of evidence. Someone who selected a category as an interest has made an explicit choice. Someone who bought from that category once has shown a behavior, but not necessarily a lasting preference.
Use that distinction in the copy. You can introduce relevant category information without announcing that you know a person’s favorite product. Avoid interpreting a purchase as a diagnosis, a treatment need or evidence of how a product was used.
AIQ documents purchase and store traits that can support audience selection. The useful fields depend on the data available in the account. Their presence does not guarantee complete purchase history or unrestricted permission to use it.
Personalize the message, not only the first line
Imagine a hypothetical dispensary with subscribers who have explicitly selected an interest in a product category. A new subscriber could receive a clear introduction to the category and its terminology. A returning customer with the same stated interest could receive a more focused comparison of product information. Someone whose interest is unknown could receive a choice of educational topics instead.
The difference belongs in the audience, body and destination. A personalized greeting would not solve the underlying problem.
The same principle applies to lifecycle messages. A new subscriber who has not purchased may need an introduction. A returning customer may need a shorter, more focused message. A lapsed customer should not be treated as if they visited yesterday.
Give missing information a respectful fallback
Customer data will not always be complete. If a first name is missing, use a natural greeting rather than displaying a broken field. If store context is uncertain, offer a choice. If a preference is unknown, use a useful general version instead of making a guess.
Review whether the platform’s personalization features behave as expected when fields are empty. A message that looks good for one sample customer may behave differently for another. Keep the result readable even when a specific detail cannot be included.
A fallback is also a strategy decision. It should preserve the purpose of the email, not merely prevent an awkward blank space.
Make the value visible without exposing unnecessary detail
Customers do not need to see all the information used to choose a message. A relevant category article can be useful without a subject line that recites a purchase history. Be especially careful with sensitive context and text that may appear on a shared screen.
Use customer information only in appropriate, authorized ways, and apply channel choices independently of audience relevance. Knowing what someone might appreciate does not establish that you can contact them through every channel.
Test whether relevance improves the experience
Choose a meaningful outcome before comparing versions. You might evaluate relevant destination visits, questions, opt-outs or subsequent behavior where dependable data is available. Avoid judging a personalization strategy only by opens or a small, uneven sample.
Hiigher’s managed email marketing connects segmentation, copy and customer journeys. The best personalization makes the email easier to use, while keeping the customer relationship more important than the amount of data you can insert.
