Personalization Governance for Cannabis Marketing

Personalization in cannabis marketing should begin with a question: does this detail make the communication more useful, or does it simply show that the business holds information about someone? For a managed email or SMS program, restraint and clear editorial judgment belong in the brief alongside creative choices.

Choose relevance before complexity

Start with information the person has deliberately provided for the communication program, where its use is appropriate and approved. A stated communication preference may be more relevant than an elaborate interpretation of account activity. Record the reason a detail is needed instead of including it because the field is available.

Separate observed information from inferred meaning. An event in an account does not tell the creative team why it happened or what someone needs personally. Avoid wording that suggests knowledge of health conditions, private circumstances or motivations the person has not shared for that purpose.

Keep a minimum-data creative brief

For each personalized element, document the data source, intended use, approval owner and fallback. Ask whether the message remains useful without that element. If it does, consider leaving the detail out. This creates a practical way to challenge unnecessary personalization before it reaches a template.

Do not use a creative brief as a reason to copy extensive customer records into working documents. Give reviewers the limited information and approved test examples needed to make the decision. Keep access and data handling within the organization’s established procedures.

Design for missing or conflicting information

A message should not embarrass the recipient or expose an internal assumption when a field is empty, outdated or inconsistent. Agree on a neutral alternative and test it. Where the missing information is essential to the purpose of the message, consider withholding the message for review rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Review the complete rendered communication, not only the variable in isolation. A technically populated field can still produce awkward, intrusive or misleading wording in context. Human review should consider how the recipient would understand the message.

Set boundaries for experiments

When testing a personalization idea, state the editorial hypothesis and the evidence needed to judge it. Do not equate a short-term engagement change with permission to collect more information. Review feedback and operational errors alongside performance observations, and remove elements whose value the team cannot explain.

Keep an approval record so later campaigns do not expand the original use without discussion. Personalization governance is a continuing set of decisions, not a single checkbox in a template review.
