Dispensary email ROI measurement starts with an agreement about what the report can establish. A platform can assign revenue to a campaign under its reporting rules. That figure alone does not establish how much additional business the email caused, or whether the program covered its costs.
For an owner evaluating managed email work, the useful deliverable is a repeatable measurement process: clear definitions, consistent exports, documented costs and an explanation of uncertainty.
Define the reporting boundary
Choose a reporting period and record the accounts, locations and campaigns included. Document the attribution window and qualifying interaction used by the reporting system. Keep those settings alongside each report so a configuration change is not mistaken for a performance change.
Ask how returns, canceled transactions, missing records and overlapping email and SMS attribution are handled. Where the data cannot answer a question, label the gap rather than filling it with an estimate presented as fact.
Count the full program cost
Build a cost register that includes agency fees, platform charges, relevant production expenses and internal review time. Separate one-time account cleanup from recurring management so the owner can understand both the initial investment and the ongoing workload.
A financial ROI calculation compares incremental contribution after relevant costs with the investment. If the available data only supports attributed revenue divided by program cost, label that ratio exactly. Do not call it proven incremental ROI. Revenue and contribution are different measures, and the business should supply its own margin assumptions.
Keep operational and financial measures separate
- Use a financial section for attributed revenue, available margin context and documented costs.
- Use an operational section for completed work, approval delays, account issues and reporting coverage.
- Use a learning section for unresolved questions and the next measurement improvement.
Engagement can help describe what happened, but it should not substitute for financial evidence. Our guide to interpreting email open rates adds context for that part of the report.
Make the review actionable
Close each reporting period with one decision: continue the agreed scope, investigate a data issue or revise an assumption. Keep the previous definition available for comparison. For planning before a program begins, read setting realistic ROI expectations. An account audit request can start the conversation about the reporting and cleanup work your team needs.
