Email and Social Media: Comparing Channel Roles and Measurement

Cannabis leaves arranged on a pale blue surface.

Asking whether email or social media delivers more ROI can hide a more useful question: what work is each channel expected to do? A comparison needs shared definitions before it needs a winner. Otherwise, a team may compare a social reach figure with email-attributed revenue and mistake two different measures for competing results.

Write a role statement for each channel

Describe the intended business role, the responsible team and the evidence available. One channel might be evaluated for publishing approved brand information; another might support an existing subscriber communication program. These are planning choices, not universal rules about what every cannabis business should do.

Include dependencies in the same brief. Who owns account access? Who approves content? Who supplies reporting? A channel with an attractive headline metric can still require more internal coordination than the business has budgeted.

Build a comparable scorecard

Give each channel its own operational measures, then create a common financial section only where the underlying data permits it. Record the reporting period, relevant costs, measurement method and missing information. Avoid ranking channels by percentages with different denominators.

  • Separate production and management costs from any distribution expense.
  • State whether a result is reported by the platform, independently reconciled or estimated.
  • Check for overlapping credit before adding channel-attributed revenue together.
  • Keep reach, engagement and financial outcomes in clearly labeled sections.

Discuss uncertainty before changing the budget

If the reports disagree, examine definitions before assuming one team performed poorly. A short reporting window, incomplete transaction records or a change in account settings can make a simple comparison misleading. Document the issue and decide what additional evidence is feasible to collect.

The business can also evaluate controllable work: whether planned assets were delivered, whether approvals were timely and whether reporting arrived with enough context to support a decision. These measures do not prove revenue impact, but they make accountability clearer.

Match the decision to the actual service scope

Hiigher’s current work centers on managed AIQ, email, SMS, retention, creative and account cleanup. Broader social media management is not included in the current packages. A channel comparison should not imply that it is.
