A customer gives your dispensary an email address to receive updates. Another enters a phone number while making a purchase. Those two actions do not tell you the same thing about how either person wants to hear from you.
List growth works best when the invitation is clear. Customers should understand which business will contact them, what they can expect, and which channel they are choosing. Your team should be able to honor that choice when the next campaign is ready.
Give people a useful reason to join
“Join our list” explains what the business wants. It says little about what the customer receives. A better invitation describes the actual communication: local store updates, useful loyalty information, or news about categories the customer chooses to follow.
Keep the promise realistic. If the program sends frequent promotional messages, do not present it as occasional service information. If a signup benefit is offered, explain its real eligibility and terms rather than letting a headline imply that everyone qualifies.
Permission-based growth is a strategic choice as well as a data question. A smaller audience that recognizes the sender and wants the content gives you a better starting point for relevant marketing than a larger collection of unexplained contact details.
Make email and SMS choices clear
Present email and text preferences in a way customers can understand separately. A person may want email but not texts. A loyalty member may want access to rewards without every available promotional channel. Do not treat a stored phone number or a purchase as automatic permission for marketing texts.
Use signup language and collection methods appropriate to the actual program, platform, jurisdiction and provider. Have qualified counsel review legal requirements where needed. This article describes a marketing approach, not a universal consent form.
For AIQ accounts, the platform provides ways to inspect SMS opt-in and opt-out status. A segment’s total size should not be treated as the number of people reachable through every channel.
Put the invitation where the interest already exists
Consider the moments when customers already seek information. A website visitor reading about your loyalty program may welcome a clear invitation to receive related updates. An in-store customer asking about upcoming events may appreciate a signup link they can open themselves.
Choose a few relevant touchpoints before adding forms everywhere. Keep the invitation readable on mobile, explain the value close to the signup action, and avoid collecting information you do not need. Staff can introduce the program without making the customer’s choices for them.
Do not buy a list to fill the gap. Purchased contacts have no demonstrated relationship with your dispensary’s signup promise. They also make it harder to explain where the audience came from and what each person agreed to receive.
Make the first message match the signup
Welcome new subscribers with the information they expected. Identify the dispensary clearly, explain what kinds of messages will follow, and provide a useful next step such as choosing a store or finding loyalty information.
If a subscriber selected email only, welcome them through email. Do not turn the welcome into an invitation to send texts they never requested. Any later invitation to add another channel should give them a genuine choice.
Make leaving straightforward too. The FTC’s commercial email guidance requires clear opt-out instructions and honoring opt-out requests. Additional state, cannabis and provider rules can apply; a lawful email practice does not establish that an SMS use case is permitted.
Look at the audience you can actually serve
Review new subscribers alongside unsubscribes, invalid addresses and meaningful engagement. Compare signup sources by whether people remain interested, not just how many names each source adds.
Hiigher connects list building with managed email, segmentation and customer journeys. The aim is to grow an audience your dispensary can communicate with clearly and usefully, one informed choice at a time.
