Reviewing Cannabis Campaign Concepts: Editorial Boundaries for Agency Teams

A playful concept can carry a claim the creative team did not intend. A food pairing, lifestyle photograph or cultural reference may suggest a particular experience even when the copy avoids saying it directly. For cannabis businesses and their agencies, concept review should happen before a polished design makes the idea harder to change.

This guide focuses on the internal review of campaign ideas, rather than product pairings or selling instructions. The practical question is whether the proposed message has a clear, supportable purpose and an owner who can approve it.

Start with a one-page concept brief

Record the business context, intended communication, channel, source material and review owner. Describe what the reader should understand without relying on an expected mood, appetite, health outcome or consumption occasion. If the idea only makes sense because it implies an effect, return it for a different creative approach.

  • What specific information is the campaign communicating?
  • Which supplied facts can the team verify?
  • What might a reader infer from the headline and image together?
  • Who resolves factual questions and who authorizes the final version?

Review the whole creative, not just the copy

Check the subject line, preview text, headline, photograph, caption, button and linked destination as one piece. Removing a sentence does not resolve an unsupported implication if the artwork still communicates it. Review cropped mobile images and image descriptions as well as the full desktop layout.

Keep a short decision log. For each flagged element, record the concern, proposed revision and owner. Use clear statuses such as needs evidence, needs specialist review, approved or removed. Avoid marking an entire concept approved while a central question remains open.

Keep partner stories factual

If a concept includes another business, confirm the relationship, approved names and permission to use supplied assets. Do not invent a collaboration, quote, endorsement or result. A partner introduction can explain who the organization is and what has been agreed without becoming an invitation to combine or consume products.

Define the boundary between production and specialist review

An agency can organize source files, identify unsupported language and revise creative. That work does not establish medical accuracy or legal approval. Escalate questions outside the team’s expertise to the client’s designated qualified reviewer. The companion guide to educational content governance explains how to separate source checking from health-related advice.

Close the review before scheduling

Keep the approved copy and artwork together, identify their version and confirm that the scheduled asset matches them. A material edit after approval returns to review. If a necessary decision is unresolved, postpone the asset rather than treating the deadline as permission to publish.

Hiigher’s campaign planning, copy and creative services can support an organized production process within an agreed scope. Start with a clear brief and review responsibilities, not a promise that a creative concept will produce a particular commercial result.
