Campaigns and Automations Have Different Roles in Dispensary Marketing

Flowering cannabis plants in a bright greenhouse

Your dispensary has something to say this week. A new subscriber also needs a welcome, and a customer who has not returned may need a different kind of follow-up. Putting all three people into the same promotional email leaves useful opportunities unexplored.

Campaigns and automations give you two ways to respond. A campaign starts with a message you want a selected audience to receive. An automated journey starts with a customer moment and continues according to the rules you set. A practical marketing program makes room for both.

Use campaigns for a shared reason to communicate

A campaign is useful when a group of customers has a timely reason to hear from you. That might be updated holiday hours, a relevant category introduction, or an explanation of a loyalty benefit. You choose who should receive it, what they need to know, and the next step.

The audience matters as much as the date. A location-specific announcement should help customers of that location. A category-focused email should have a reason to interest its recipients. Sending to everyone simply because an email is ready often weakens that connection.

Before adding a campaign to the calendar, finish this sentence: “This helps these customers do this.” If the answer is only “see our latest promotion,” sharpen the customer benefit before building the creative.

Use automations for moments that keep happening

New people join your audience throughout the month. First purchases happen on different days. Regular customers stop visiting at different times. An automation can respond to those moments without waiting for the next scheduled campaign.

A useful starting point is one journey with a clear purpose:

  • Subscriber welcome: explain what someone signed up for and help them find their relevant store.
  • First-purchase follow-up: answer practical questions and explain how to access an existing loyalty benefit.
  • Return-visit reminder: offer a relevant reason to reconnect after a meaningful gap in purchase activity.

Each journey needs a sensible end. Someone who makes a purchase should not keep receiving messages written for a person who has never purchased. Someone who opts out should not receive another marketing message through that channel.

Choose the customer experience before the feature

Imagine a dispensary publishing an educational guide to a product category. A campaign can introduce it to eligible subscribers with a known interest in that category. A welcome journey can offer the same guide when a new subscriber chooses that interest. The content supports the same marketing idea, but the timing reflects two different customer situations.

That does not require a complicated journey with a dozen branches. Start with the question customers need answered. Decide what information is necessary to recognize that moment, and whether your platform can use it reliably.

AIQ’s Flows documentation describes trigger-based journeys with delays, audience splits and message steps. Availability depends on the account’s plan, permissions and connected data. A diagram of a journey should never be mistaken for proof that every step is available in every account.

Let campaigns and journeys share the same attention budget

Customers experience your messages together. They do not separate an automated welcome from a promotional blast just because your team built them in different places.

Consider what a newly subscribed customer will receive during the same week as a store campaign. Prioritize the most useful message, avoid redundant reminders, and use the controls available in the account to manage timing and eligibility. Add SMS or push only when the customer is eligible for that channel and the message is permitted.

Build the next useful piece

If your calendar is busy but new subscribers receive no introduction, start with the welcome. If a reliable welcome already exists but store announcements are confusing, improve the campaigns. Judge the next investment by the gap in the customer experience rather than the number of messages you can launch.

Hiigher’s retention and lifecycle marketing support connects customer journeys, segmentation and creative with managed execution. The goal is a program that gives each message a reason to exist and each customer a clearer next step.
